This is mainly composed of connective tissue and connects the uterus to the vagina. The cervix has a central opening (os) that varies in shape from circular (nulliparous woman) to a slit (parous woman). The cervix has mucin-secreting glands on its surface that lubricate the vagina.
The endocervical canal of the cervix is lined with mucous columnar epithelium. In contrast, the vaginal cervix is lined with squamous epithelium. The transition zone between the endocervical canal and the vaginal cervix is the area where there is predisposition to malignant change.
