Aetiology

Causes include:

  • local trauma
  • haemorrhagic disease of the newborn
  • necrotising enterocolitis, which may cause melaena, fresh blood per rectum, or haematemesis
  • disseminated intravascular coagulation, secondary to processes such as infection, necrotising enterocolitis and birth asphyxia
  • stress ulcers in sick neonates
  • Meckel's diverticulum
  • alloimmune thrombocytopaenia
  • haemophilia in boys

More often than not, a haemolytic process will result in jaundice also.
